Our friend, Jack Chen of Shanghai Studio, the wonderful guy that was responsible for all our freaky decorations during our Halloween party and the vampire that freaked quite a few of you out, shows us that his less creepy side can be just as creative with his very first personal art show of Angel art paintings.

Jack's Angel Art Show @ Shanghai Studio

Free entry for everyone in white or an angel outfit
Where:
1950 Huaihai Zhonglu, No. 4 (by Xingguo Lu)

This has the potential to be really disgusting, but the "oh, no, they didn't!" factor is enough to pique our interest: Rooms filled with popcorn, hot bodies shimmering with color-enhanced movie-popcorn butter, crumbs in our shoes and corn husks in our hair -- feederists rejoice, but Shanghaiist is still on the fence.
We would, however, like to propose the following soundtrack:
"Popcorn," by Hot Butter
If you go, take pictures and send them to Shanghaiist: photos@shanghaiist.com, or upload to Flickr and tag with "shanghaiist."

Shanghaiist grudgingly attended the "Excusez Moi" launch party at Bar Rouge last night, a new monthly concept that brings "a unique sensual-chic experience to Shanghai’s nightlife scene." While we weren't exactly "swept away by a wave of sensuality," there were a couple of guys without shirts there. Oh yeah, and a girl in a bra! Naturally, we could hardly control ourselves at this "Red Hot" event with all our "deepest fantasies" come true. This was Shanghaiist's first time at Bar Rouge, but sadly, the best thing we have heard about it, the balcony and view of the Bund, was closed off that evening. Probably to protect the locals from raunchy foreigners. Luckily, we weren't roofied at all, and the women seemed to refrain from doing strange things with champagne bottles, despite the ad's encouragements. (Apologies for the blurriness in some pics, we're still figuring out our new camera!)

Now, that felt like a 4th of July party (and some Canadians in attendance said it wasn't a bad effort for Canada Day, either). Hot, sweaty weather. No rain! Hamburgers. Beer. Live music. Water balloons. Hamburgers. Beer. Drinking contests. Fireworks (albeit during daylight). Hamburgers. Beer. Ketchup battles. Some guy from Beijing getting pantsed. Hamburgers. Beer.
You know, the usual.
A big congratulations to chef Eric Johnson and Team Jean-Georges — they created the judges' choice for "Best Burger in Shanghai." Bubba's Smokehouse Burgers (from Bubba's Texas BBQ, of course) finished a close second. And Blue Frog's chili burger came in third.
Winner of the People's Choice award was SH mag's Beef Tips team, headed by former chef, one-time motorcycler and current food writer Christopher St. Cavish (pictured). They utilized the age-old (fatty meat + lots of melted butter) / spandex = popularity theory to perfection.
Shanghaiist would like to thank all partygoers, judges and contestants for making the first-ever City Diner Shanghai Independence Day Burger Grill-Off such a success. Thanks to American Craft Beer Partners, Henry's Brewery & Grill and VIN for supplying some tasty libations. Thanks, too, to our great musical guests Lonestar Wind, Hard Queen, Ellen Manning, and Tom & Jerry featuring JJ Davis.
And a very special thank you (drenched in melted butter) to Kelley, Danyeu and everyone else at City Diner for pulling this all together.
Finally, thanks to Canada for allowing this party to happen on Canada Day. July 4 falls on a Friday next year, so you guys are safe for 2008.
More photos available here. We should have a slideshow ready this evening. Got photos you'd like to share? Email them to photos at shanghaiist.com.

The first time Shanghaiist went to Absolute House, it was for Jennifer Gentle, and we weren't too impressed by the venue. Last night changed that, though, as Shanghaiist attended what they could easily say was one of the best concerts ever put on in the city. After a very mediocre afternoon at Dino Beach's Rock It! festival (would it have killed them to serve some beer there?), Shanghaiist headed to Absolute House for a show where everyone danced, jumped, and sang along with MC Ninja. In the meantime, Shanghaiist is going to try to delay their continuing weekend hangover by heading to the City Diner Independence Day Burger Grill-Off and downing a few. See you there! NOW!

Burgers. Beer. Sangria. Live Music. Fireworks. Prizes. Fun.
As much as you want of the above for 150 kuai.
It kind of sells itself, doesn't it?
Here are the confirmed entrants in the "Best Burger in Shanghai" competition:
SH, City Weekend, Sherpa's, Jebsen/Vin, American Craft Beer/ The Naked Cow, Blue Frog, Azul/Viva, Bubba's Smokehouse, ARCH, Jean-Georges, Buns of Steel and Renmin Burger.
And here are the confirmed judges:
Brendan Byrne (Hint Magazine), Shamus Sillar (Shanghai Talk), Collin Crowell (City Weekend), Neil Hsu (Black Sheep Design), Jarrett Wrisley (formerly of SH), Michael Connolly (Shanghai Expat), Chef Sean (Finestre), Gary Heyne (Henry's Brewery & Grill), Tim Sher (Buzz Magazine), Robbie Austria (McCormick Foods) and some guy named Dan Washburn (Shanghaiist).
(To avoid any conflicts of interest, judges will be sequestered inside the restaurant until judging has finished, and judges will not know whose burgers they are tasting until after everything is completed. There will also be a popular vote that all party-goers can participate in.)
Also, despite rumors to the contrary, the part will go on rain or shine. We'll have plenty of tents (and, really, after a few beers who notices a little rain anyway?).
Here are the party details:

(There are still one or two slots open for the Grill-Off: Want to compete? Click here)
- Drink: Free flow of beer, sangria and other drinks! Beers included are Henry's Pale Ale on tap, cans of Fosters and a limited supply of American microbrews from the guys at American Craft Beer Partners.

- Fun: Fireworks at sundown, lucky draw with great prizes

See you on Sunday!

Twenty-six hours until the next Shanghaiist Happy Hour ... and we've got our work cut out for us. We have to sort through more than 12 hours of Beatles covers songs — an amount that is illegal in most countries. Thanks to our readers (and BitTorrent) we have unearthed some gems, though, and you can see the entire list as it stands today after the jump (believe it or not, we still hove some downloads cooking). We have no covers of the Beatles song "Rain", which is good because weather.com is calling for clear skies by tomorrow evening (fingers crossed).
Let's refresh your memory on what's going on tomorrow:
When: Friday, June 15, 7 pm to midnight
Where: Abbey Road, 45 Yueyang Lu, near Dongping Lu, in the former French Concession. Tel: 6431-6787
Highlights:
- Drinks 50% off
- Music: Beatles covers galore!
- Free finger food
- Come dressed as a Beatle (or beetle) and get a free drink
- Lots of outdoor seating
- Everyone is invited!
Download the party flyer here.

RMB 15, Draft Carlsberg 0.5
RMB 12, Carlsberg bottle
RMB 12, Tsingtao bottle
RMB 17, House red and white wine
RMB 10, Soft drinks

RMB 20, Whiskey anf soft drink
RMB 20, Cocktails (Sex on the Beach, Pina Colada, Margarita)

Press the link below to see all the songs we have right now. If you sent in a song and don't see it below, please tell us. And a word of warning: William Shatner's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" does not go down any better after nine Tsingtaos (we tried it last night).
See you soon!
