... with SCAA's Christmas gala which happens this evening at 6.30pm at O'Malleys! RMB 100 at the door gets you a glass of Champagne, two standard drinks, comfort food, lots of free gifts and one Holiday Raffle ticket for a chance to win over 100 prizes totaling more than RMB 150,000!
For those of you on the hunt for Christmas trees but don't know where to get them, Smart Shanghai has the answers!
'Tis the season for giving! The Golddiggers for the Love of Ayi event which takes place this Saturday 7pm has been moved to Creek Art instead, due to legal problems ran into by Kathleen's 5 which was going to host the event. Check out their Facebook page for more details.
Shanghai artist Chen Hangfeng (the guy that brought us the Nike poo clip) has an art show going on at the Radisson Hotel Pudong (yes, of all places) entitled Christ MASS Production. Adam Minter of Shanghai Scrap attended the opening and loved it.
Another interesting exhibition to watch out for is the Christ in China exhibition which is back for its second run from this Sunday 3pm at Studio Rouge's M50 Gallery on Moganshan Lu. The series of photographs depict the enculturation of Christianity in rural China. We've been told this is a good one so don't miss it!

Over this weekend, Blue Frog celebrated its grand opening in Macau's Venetian in a glitzy event that featured performances by Shaolin monks, Australian DJ Alex Taylor and Shanghai's very own Sugar Mama and the Cotton Club Band. Apparently, quite a number of people flew over from Shanghai for the event (too bad for us, we were never invited). In this video, Blue Frog looks a lot more like a club than anything else, and certainly not like the Blue Frog we used to know when we were living on Maoming Lu, literally two minutes walk away from the outlet there. Still, all this looks really great and we extend our hearty congratulations to Bob Boyce and his team for making Shanghai proud. Las Vegas next, perhaps?

Please excuse us for what will be a day of light posting. We've been puking cosmopolitans and bile ALL morning from this really hot party last night at the Le Meridien that we didn't tell you about (hah! sometimes we prefer to keep the fun to ourselves), but even before we've said goodbye to the thousand diablos hammering on our head right now, we're already planning on where to get ourselves further plastered tonight. Long-time readers of Shanghaiist will know that we have this thing for bomb shelters and underground dungeons, but tonight we're going to check out for ourselves what this buzz surrounding Shanghai's latest underground venue, The Shelter, is all about. Tonight, the Micro DJ collective ??? comprising of Bernard Wusner, B6, Ben Huang, dji and tootekool ??? comes together with some of the biggest names in the local jazz scene ??? Coco Zhao, Vladimir and our very own JQ Whitcomb ??? to present microshelter. Included in tonight's quirky and eclectic mix is the "twisted installation artistry" of recent London Royal School of Art graduate, Simon Husslein. Twisted sounds like us, so we will be sure to check it out.

Tonight, 10pm

We seriously LOVE some of the things we hear about going on in our city. Yes, some of the people we meet here can be harsh and mean, but this story goes to show that humanity still exists in Shanghai. Two weeks ago, Rebekah Pothaar, an executive with Ctrip.com, found that her ayi's husband was in a serious motorbike collision. They went with her to the hospital and found that surgery was going to cost RMB43,000 — a sum that would take them forever to pay back. So Rebekah set up a Facebook group, invited all her friends to a fundraising dinner buffet and a book/DVD swap at Haya's Mediterranean Restaurant, and they raised RMB12,300 in one evening!
Knowing they're still a ways off from covering the full cost of the surgery, more friends got together to pose nude (is this becoming a trend or what?) for a series of shots that will be auctioned off at a separate charity event aptly named Golddiggers for the Love of Ayi. Some friends stripped readily, while another friend, Juliette McCawley, offered her photography skills. The event will be held at Kathleen's 5 on Saturday, Dec 15 (that's two weekends from now!), and the program details are as follows:
Tickets 250 RMB presale, 300 RMB @ door, includes dinner & 2 drinks + afterparty [100 RMB from every ticket will go to the ayi!]
"Money Shots" - Silent Photo Auction
14 International Golddiggers Pose for Charity
6:30-7:30 Pre-dinner Drinks & Canapes
7:30-9:00 Dinner Buffet
9:00-10:00 "Love for Sale" Bachelor/Bachelorette Auction
11:00-2:00 Digger Afterparty
Performances, Dancers, Money Music
Dress Code: Slinky & Sleek, Red & Black
Get your tickets in advance presale cause we are only selling 300 of them.
And here's some chicken soup for your soul this cold Monday morning — the story from Rebekah that started it all off:
I didn't sleep well last night. For once the insomnia wasn't induced by Red Bull, but guilt. On Saturday night, my ayi's [cleaning lady's] husband was in a head-on collision on his motorbike. His right leg is now splinters and mashed potatoes. The surgery will cost 43 000 RMB. They have no health insurance. They have been able to get a loan, but this loan will almost be impossible for them to pay back.
One of the perks of living in China is everyone has an ayi ["auntie"]. I quickly got over the fact that I am paying a grown woman 10 RMB an hour ($1.4) to clean my mess. I return from work on Tuesdays and Fridays, sighing with contentment at the polished hardwood floors, clean sheets, organized closet, scrubbed bathtub, and folded towels. A pretty mother of two, wearing heels and sassy outfits, ayi's appearance came as a surprise. She can't read. We communicate in smiles and charades. She doesn't know my name. I don't know hers. She laughs at my singing. She laughs at my brother's pink kitchen. She laughs when I lock myself out of my apartment and call her at 5am to let me in. She always refuses to accept more payment for her work.
At the amount I pay her, ayi would have to work 15 years to raise enough for her husband's surgery. Ayi is also employed by five of my friends who will pitch in as much as we can. I encourage you to hit up your employers, companies, charitable organizations, non-profits and sugar daddies to help. If you have suggestions about fundraising events, let me know. I will keep you informed on how fundraising is going and on his health. Thanks for listening.
People with a heart. Doing random acts of kindness for someone they may or may not know. We love it!
To show your support, just sign up on their Facebook page to let them know you will be turning up for the event, or call Rebekah Pothaar at 15901995801 to find out how you can help.
And here's the picture of the ayi and her husband in hospital:

As we speak (type?), RnB diva and superstar, Beyoncé is probably relaxing in her luxury suite somewhere in this city. We, on the other hand, are not relaxing. We are anxiously awaiting tomorrow night., when she will take the Shanghai Grand Stage to belt our some songs and shake that tailfeather of hers.
In case you forgot (and how could you really?), we told you about the concert ages ago, so most of you probably have tickets already. Of course, we've been busy eating, drinking, sleeping working so we haven't ordered our tickets yet.
At this late stage (no pun intended), there is usually no way to find out what tickets are still available for purchase. Well, consider those days dead and gone. Thanks to an in-the-know reader named Joseph, we can now view the available seats in real-time, thanks to MyPiao. After taking a few minutes to register for an account on the website, we quickly looked at the handy-dandy clickable seat map (pictured) to see which seats were still available. And luckily for us, there are still tickets left. And now, we are ready go! From the looks of it, an almost sold-out crowd including us will to get to enjoy The Beyonce Experience in the flesh.

We told you it was going to be the biggest, baddest, spookiest, scariest Halloween didn't we? A whopping 700 of you Shanghaiist freaks came to storm the gates of hell and turn the city upside down last Saturday, and my what a party that was. One of our friend's girlfriends was too spooked to enter because "there were too many freaks and weirdoes" but hey that's just the way Shanghaiist likes it. At one point in the party, we thought we saw Osama bin Laden make out with George Bush.
Many thanks to Ken Yip and Jack of Shanghai Studio for the pictures. More pictures from the wonderful guys at EnjoyClassifieds here. For those of you with more pictures of people making a fool of themselves that you'd like to share with us, put them up on Flickr and tag them shanghaiist or add them on on our Facebook group (remember to tag yourself in the pictures!). There is still a wonderful video coming up so stay tuned!

Shanghaiist's mailbox has been inundated by emails from all you naughty girls out there asking when the launch party to that Shanghai Hairy Crabs nude rugby calendar will be held. Well, gurls, mark your calendars and save the date! The action happens this Thursday at MAO from 8pm onwards! RMB200 gets you a Solid Vodka open bar, snacks, a goody bag, and yes a copy of that calendar (we know you've been waiting for it).
Remember, it's all for a good cause! Once again, this is the charity that the boys have shed their clothes for: XinXing Aid for Street Kids is the first and only Chinese NGO for street children providing a rehabilitation program of medical, educational, social investigation, family mediation and psychological care. It is a 24hr open centre for children 6years to 18 years based in Baoji, Shaanxi province, China. Whilst supported by the government, XinXing ASK is not government funded. It relies on donations to operate.
And yes, apparently the players are available for AUCTION (whatever that means). Heaven knows how long successful bidders will keep them for (and if each bidder is allowed to bid for more than one boy!). Well, let's find out this Thursday.
What: Launch party of the Shanghai Hairy Crabs nude rugby calendar
When: 25 October, Thursday 8pm
Where: MAO @ 46 Yueyang Lu (岳阳路46号)

Singapore Season, a series of cultural diplomacy events that started in London in 2005, has been kickstarted in Shanghai with a sell-out concert by pop star JJ Lin at the Hongkou Stadium last Sunday.
About the only show throughout the entire series of events that has a Shanghai connection is Little Toys, a remake of the Chinese classic silent film 小玩意 (ie., little toys), starring 1930s screen goddess Ruan Lingyu (阮玲玉). This production won standing ovations when it was staged in the 2003 Hong Kong Arts Festival, 2003 Singapore Arts Festival, and the 2003 Copenhagen Images of Asia Festival, and now it's finally coming to us. To be staged in the nostalgic Shanghai Concert Hall on 2 November, Little Toys will appeal to all you film buffs and music aficionados out there.
The production is the brainchild of multi-talented Singaporean composer, recording artist, singer, instrumentalist, poet and painter, Mark Chan, who is known particularly for his unique blend of Eastern and Western styles of music. Trained in both Western and Chinese music (he is a classical counter-tenor and plays the dizi and xiao), and with seven solo albums under his belt, Chan has also written for top Asian popstars such as Andy Lau.
Other performances to watch out for in the Singapore Season include those by Singapore Symphony Orchestra (21 Oct), the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (27 Oct), the Singapore Dance Theatre (25 Oct). We will also be on the lookout for the Singapore Film Festival (27 Oct - 1 Nov), and the Singapore Evening, to be held at the Pudong Shangri-La on 26 Oct featuring shows by fashion designer Ashley Isham and popstar Sun Ho. Beijingists, take heart. Some of the events are also coming to you.

Well, this should come as no surprise, but is still sad to hear. The 1234 Beach Rock Festival has been canceled due to (geez, this should be really hard to guess) issues with the government. Organizers are scrambling to try and put together a free concert at another venue for the out of town bands that won't be able to refund their plane/train tickets. Shanghaiist will keep you updated on what is happening as the news pours in.

Everyone's having their own little calendar these days it seems. Second Chance Animal Aid recently came up with one, and this time, it's the boys from The Shanghai Rugby Football Club and Shanghai Hairy Crabs, and they've shed their clothes for a good cause!
Shanghaiist caught a sneak preview of some of the pics, and connoisseur of men that we are — we're telling you these boys will give Dieux du Stade a good run for their money!
Here's a little about the charity that they're trying to support:
XinXing Aid for Street Kids is the first and only Chinese NGO for street children providing a rehabilitation program of medical, educational, social investigation, family mediation and psychological care. It is a 24hr open centre for children 6years to 18 years based in Baoji, Shaanxi province, China. Whilst supported by the government, XinXing ASK is not government funded. It relies on donations to operate.
A launch party is planned, details are just being firmed up and we hear there will be an afterparty where you will have the chance to bid in an auction for each of the players, so watch this space!

Every year at some point in autumn, to the delight of Shanghai's local musicians, a gargantuan 4-day music exhibition arrives at Pudong's Expo Center. Called simply "prolight and sound", the music expo features 12,000 square meters of exhibition space and expects to attract at least 12,000 visitors this year. Instrument manufacturers from around China all show up, as well as international makers and dealers of instruments. Every kind of instrument is represented, from classical Chinese instruments to multi-colored trumpets, and everything that goes with music as well like instrument cases, stands, sheet music, electronic music gear of every possible kind, sound systems, lighting systems, and on and on. The expo is open to the public, at least the times that we've gone it always has been; and on the last day of the expo it's possible to get some great bargains on instruments (as it means that it's one more instrument they don't have to cart back home) and other equipment. So if you've been holding out to buy a new instrument, check it out on the last day and you might get lucky and find just what you need for a great price. It starts tomorrow and runs through Saturday (Oct 17-20) and is held at the new expo center in Pudong.

In our 10 years of clubbing life we have never seen anything like this:
The DJ with the fast fingers is Jeff Milligan and if you like him you can see him live at Air Bar this Saturday. His website says: Jeff's highly technical, three/four turntable style put him in high demand across North America and by the age of twenty, Jeff was playing the Midwest circuit (Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland etc.) and nationwide, all over Canada. Jeff is legendarily regarded by his contemporaries as one the most technically talented DJ's in the world.
Indeed, if you download the 2.5 pages of riders for his standard performance contract you'll see that 2 of those pages relate solely to the set-up of his DJ booth and turntables.
Milligan will headline at the 'microair' party this Saturday night. He is supported by DJs tootekool (micro's founder), Ben Huang and Micrometropolice. 'micro' was the first minimal house/techno platform in Shanghai. Like other local promoters such as Antidote, Bananas and Uprooted Sunshine, micro has garnered a loyal following due to repeated successful parties. The event is almost guaranteed to be well remembered, thanks also to the extra 4 speakers and 2 bass - hired to make sure Milligan's fancy finger work doesn't go unheard.
This party on the rooftop of Shanghai with a outdoor terrace is set to be one of the last big parties to end the summer. That's why it's also a chance to say farewell to DJ Micrometropolice. Those who know him will know that in just 1.5 years in Shanghai he's been behind many of the electronic parties that became the talk of town.
