Or more specifically, Hilton, which was rendered as Hiton in a recent issue of The Bund (外滩画报). They ran some pictures and an interview with Paris Hilton when she was here, but unfortunately, it's only in Chinese. She has some interesting thoughts about dark matter in the universe, which she's been exploring for her upcoming novel. On the other hand, it seems that she won't discuss where her money comes from, or if she's saving up money, or who she will vote for in the upcoming US presidential elections. However, she does believe that everyone has to do their part to combat global warming, even if that means selling their only fur coat. The article talks about Paris' entrepreneurial plans and vaguely mentions something about laying the foundations of her fame and success in China.
We are pretty sure now that there is no God.

At a recent Andy Lau concert in Chengdu, one fan managed to slip past the watchful eye of the security guards to get to the stage so as to present a bouquet of flowers to the mega-popstar. As soon as he got down though, he was surrounded by a mob of security guards and manhandled by them (it is not clear from the video whether the fan was actually hit by the guards). Upon seeing this, Andy Lau jumped down from the 2 metre high stage and a little confrontation between him and the guards ensued (it also turned the crowd wild). Eventually, Andy Lau walked the fan out of the stadium. (via Virtual China)

You just have to give it to Furong Jiejie (芙蓉姐姐) — the "grandmommy" of Chinese Internet idols — for her remarkable ability to constantly reinvent herself to keep herself in the news. Recently dumped by her boyfriend for revealing too much of herself, Furong Jiejie has now declared that she's looking for a hunky laowai boyfriend. Many moons ago, she once said she's not into laowai's, but apparently that has all changed (oh the miracles that can be wrought through breakups!). Interested applicants, please call her directly at 13121619119 or email her at frjj@188.com. To find out more about her, refer to her official web presence at furongjiejie.bokee.com. Have you ever wondered what life must be like for someone who is watched everywhere she goes, whether she's eating, drinking, sleeping, shopping? It's the reason why Shanghai photographer Don Yap has tagged her "jailbird" in one of his recent portraits of her. Watch Paris eat xiaolongbao at Nanxiang and sip tea at Yuyuan, and go shopping at Lu Kun's (the greatest PR coup scored yet by any Shanghai-based designer!). The Shanghai municipal government also owes her several million dollars in media value because, as our friends from Smart Shanghai reported (in an aptly-named story), she didn't know what to say at the press conference had to "gush" like three times that "Shanghai looks like the future!" As a result, that one line has been splashed across headlines everywhere. (Yet as SmSh reports, that line wasn't very original because it's exactly the same thing that Gore Vidal said when he was in town!) When asked what she thought of Chinese men, she went absolutely quiet "Um ... They're polite and sweet. I haven't really met any actually. But tonight I'm going to be at Attica." We hope someone at the Grand Hyatt had the good sense to install a video camera in her suite? Shanghaiist will gladly pay five million dollars kuai for the scoop.

Ex-convict/drunk driver/pornstar Heiress/socialite/singer/designer Paris Hilton — fresh from her modelling gig with Fila Sportswear in Seoul — is now in Shanghai for the first time to attend Friday's 2007 MTV Awards and Style Gala at the Shanghai Grand Stage. Apparently, she didn't think the Hilton hotel would make her feel at home here, so she decided to check into the Grand Hyatt at the Jinmao instead. Shanghai Daily, believe it or not, has the scoop:
"The panoramic Bund view from the hotel room seemed the major reason to attract her there," said an employee of MTV China, who asked not to be named. "Hilton hopes to gain a better understanding of the city's landmark charm within a limited time."
Hilton has already booked three sets of evening dresses from Xintiandi's Shanghai Tang for the gala, including a traditional qipao.
Officials from MTV China suggested she might put on a mini fashion show.
During her stay, which ends this weekend, Hilton will also visit the Shanghai Museum and Oriental Pearl TV Tower.

Li Yuchun (李宇春) — the "androgynous wonder from Sichuan" who was the first winner of Super Voice Girls (an American Idol-style talent show) — recently gave a concert in Nanjing, and she performed in *gasp* a skirt! Now if you have no clue what an earth-shattering revolution Super Voice Girls represented (for the very first time, viewers were allowed to vote for their favourite singer via SMS, causing some powers-that-be to quake with fear) and how big Li Yuchun is, just look at the shitload of SVG-related stories we've done before. Two years after her big win, Li made it to the cover of a special issue of TIME magazine called "Asia's Heroes" and remains just as popular today. In fact, she is so wildly popular she had to be escorted away right after her concert ended to escape from the crazy mobs. Since the day she was catapulted to stardom, a million allegations have been made that she's *** — something she hasn't confirmed nor denied. But with that many more dykie singers around in the market today (and we LURVE dykes), putting on a skirt might be the only way she knows how to hit the headlines (and the chatrooms). The first reaction Shanghaiist had watching the video was one of pity though. Tell us if we're wrong, but the poor grrl does look very uncomfortable in that thing. We hope her manager doesn't make her wear the mini-skirt next!

Keanu Reeves was spotted on Friday at the Yuyuan Gardens at some Chinese restaurant enjoying his Shanghai dumplings (does anyone know which restaurant that is, sure doesn't look like Nanxiang to us?)
Anyhow, the young gentleman on Reeves' left is martial arts expert Chen Hu (陈虎) who worked together with him on The Matrix, and then went on to make a name for himself in Kill Bill. We're not sure who's on his right. Apart from that, Reeves appeared to be travelling alone and without bodyguards, but yes, with a martial arts expert by your side, you probably don't need one anyway.
And with no movie slated for 2007, Reeves would have lots of time to be travelling around Shanghai alone eating dumplings, although he does appear to be working on a movie called The Day The Earth Stood Still which will be a remake of the 1951 classic sci-fi film.

Remember Hairong Tiantian (海容天天), the Chinese blogger, who shot to fame last year by soliciting pictures of limp dicks? She started dabbling with a bit of performance art earlier this year when she joined artist Ye Fu living in adjacent tiny glass rooms, sealed off from one another and the rest of the world, in Beijing's eastern Jiuxianqiao industrial area. Well this time, she has shed her clothes again all in the name of art, in a performance item called 'Lotus' under an exhibition called 99 Tents, 99 Dreams (“99个帐篷,99个梦想”) at the 'Left and Right Art Zone' (左右艺术区) in Beijing.

MORE PICS AFTER THE JUMP
WARNING: MAY NOT BE WORK-SAFE!!!
A member of the audience lights up an incense stick within Hairong Tiantian's tent.

We have been told we're as straight as a Grand Prix circuit and as camp as a row of tents (how apt in this case), but yes we do know a beautiful thing when we see it. This girl does have amazing boobs.

And check out the really fake-looking strategically placed lotus flower.

Gawkers Art lovers gather around to take pictures to sell on the internet ponder over the depth and profundity of Hairong Tiantian's message for mankind with her performance item.

Left: A look at the 99 tents.
Right: The princess finally awakes from her slumber, looking like she dreads it's time to put her clothes back on.

A New Zealand-born contestant of the first series of Big Brother Australia, Gordon Sloan, has died in Beijing on a suspected heroin overdose.
From the Herald Sun:
According to a source close to Sloan, the former reality star's parents had travelled from their home in New Zealand after their son was admitted to hospital in a coma on September 1.
It is understood the devastated couple opted to turn off the life support that had been keeping their 34-year-old son alive.
While the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, sources said Sloan was believed to have overdosed on heroin.
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed a New Zealand-born Australian citizen from Victoria died in Beijing yesterday.
Ben Williams, who won the series in which Sloan featured, described his mate's death as "an absolute tragedy".
"He was a very colourful person and definitely lived life to the max," he said. "It's an absolute tragedy."
Big Brother circles were told about Sloan's hospitalisation on Wednesday, but Williams said his death was "still a terrible shock".

Singaporean megastar Stefanie Sun (possibly the most popular Mandarin female singer around according to Answers.com) has been slammed by her fans here and elsewhere for a picture that was taken on her most recent trip to Tahoua, Niger where she is visiting impoverished children. The offending picture shows Sun appearing to single-handedly hold up a scale from which hung a malnourished Niger kid bursting into tears. It has since been clarified that it was a crane holding up the scale and not Sun herself (although we're not sure if it makes any difference).
From a fan in Australia:
虽然孙燕姿是在做好事,但她这样做看上去很不舒服,像在虐儿!
"Although Sun Yanzi is doing a good deed, this picture doesn't make her look very good. It's like she's abusing the kid!"
And another in Xi'an:
没看见那孩子在哭么,都是些什么人,孙燕姿大明星为了显示你所谓的爱心就要靠这些举动证明?要做善事不一定要这么高调吧?
"Did you not see the child is crying? Sheesh, what are these people? Why do celebrities like Sun Yanzi have to use such acts to show they're doing something good? Is there a need for charity to be so outwardly portrayed?"

We're not sure Bai Ling's latest lady parts on display counts as news, given the fact that her private parts are more well-publicized than she is. But, combine the Bai-sexual actress' escapades with Zhang Ziyi's body double's web-search for love; add the biggest *** in China; and throw in a PRC plug for "sexy famous models... touching each other," and we'll take the bait.

Naked Ziyi Alter-Ego Searches Internet for Foreign Husband, Roomie
Zhang Ziyi's body-double from "The Banquet," Shao Xiaoshan-- you know, the one who demanded credits for the public baring of her behind?-- has placed ads for a mail-order foreigner husband and roommate on Sina. Hubby requirements include the following: Male
Citizen of foreign country
Not a pervert
Heterosexual
Has the trust of his own country's government
Will not control me
Will not be nasty to me
Will care for me Clearly naive to the viral nature of the blogosphere, Xiaoshan includes her phone number and e-mail address. Shanghaiist would never print such potentially damaging, private information... but is not above telling you that Danwei did.
Zhuhai's *** is Bigger Than Yours
Zhuhai, Guangdong businessman Jia Yongqing paid 20,000 yuan to, er, erect a 5-meter tall penis in the city's Zhoumen district. Negative backlash forced the city to move the monumental phallus to the interior of a family planning clinic and away from the public eye.
*** Erotica with Chinese Characteristics
PRC mouthpiece The People's Daily publishes a photo montage entitled 性感名模白歆惠林苇如写真缠绵过火. Danwei translates, "Sexy famous models Bai Xinhui and Lin Wei in hot candid poses touching each other." English-language PD omits photos of the friendly romp-- the feature was for Chinese eyes, only.

Who is the most successful pianist in the world, according to The Guinness Book of World Records? Who sells millions of his albums? Who was referred to as the Prince of Romance by Nancy Reagan? Whose concerts are always sold out, wherever he performs? No, this is not Jay Zhou, Justin Timberlake, or even less André Rieu, but instead the wonderful and charming French pianist Richard Clayderman.
Clayderman is most probably the most has-been pianist alive. However, he regularly hits the news in China. Having started to perform here since about 15 years ago, he was in Beijing last Sunday, July 1st, to perform his 100th recital.
Born in 1953, Clayderman was enrolled in the Paris Conservatory of Music at the age of twelve. Four years later, he was placed first in a piano competition. When he launched his professional career, he opted for popular music over classical music. But Clayderman's life changed dramatically in 1976, when he recorded the single Ballade pour Adeline, according to CCTV International. The album sold twenty million copies in 38 countries and since then, he received huge success. "A live concert, broadcast on Chinese television in 1987 attracted more than 800 million viewers", says Answers.com.
CCTV states that Clayderman found his niche in the Chinese market: "His pieces are played extensively in public areas, elevators, lobbies, malls." Oh, we guess nothing can be better than an audience that doesn't really listen to you...
But the pianist, famous for "his gentlemanly charm and thick French accent" (gasp), also came to Beijing to mark the opening of his first piano school in China, named after what else but himself. He promised to come regularly to teach in person, and declared that he will write the textbooks himself. Apparently Clayderman's popularity in China has fueled interest among Chinese children to master the piano. Many wish to become the next Clayderman; and their parents hope they will. We don't.

...says the Chinese female population. According to China Daily, the Hong Kong superstar topped the list of most desired sperm surveyed by 1000 women and conducted by Self Magazine. The women cited his good looks and wealth. Right on his heels, in second place, was none other than Bill Gates, also due to his wealth great charm and good looks. At a measly and disappointing tenth place came Brad Pitt.
Whether or not Lau would actually donate his sperm is another question for... various reasons. Even if one of these 1000 women surveyed did get with the Cantonese star, Shanghaiist has a feeling he would be too high-maintenance, anyways. Don't believe us? Just ask Yang Qinji.
Why China Daily only posted the top ten men and forgot to mention that Shanghaiist got the #11 spot is beyond us, but here they are anyway:
1. Andy Lau
2. Bill Gates
3. Takeshi Kaneshiro
4. Liu Xiang
5. David Beckham
6. Li Ka-shing
7. Tony Leung
8. Louis Koo
9. Lee-hom Wang
10. Brad Pitt
