  • Coming soon: The world's biggest ferris wheel

greatwheel1106.jpgIf tourism officials have their way, visitors to Beijing in 2009 will not only have to climb the Great Wall of China, but also the Great Wheel, says Ben Blanchard of Reuters.

At 208 metres tall, the Great Wheel will be the world's largest ferris wheel — higher and bigger than both the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer which opens in March next year.

Our eyes were drawn to these lines in the Reuters report:

The giant ferris wheel will have 48 air conditioned observation capsules, each of which can carry up to 40 passengers,...
Air-conditioned capsules? Without the a/c, we're not sure how many tourists would want to ride in the Wheel. The smog in Beijing literally takes your breath away.

...and on a good day even the Great Wall is expected to be visible in the mountains to Beijing's north.
On a bad day, we assume NOTHING will be visible.

Interestingly, the company that sold the idea to the Beijing officials is the same company that sold the idea to Singapore. We think these guys are in a great business, ladies and gentlemen. Allow us to uncover their business model to you, which just consists of TWO simple steps:
    1. Tell one city you can build them the world's largest wheel.
    2. Once you have them sold, start building the wheel and move on to your next targets. Then repeat Step 1.

Start placing your bets where the next world's tallest ferris wheel will be now. Dubai anyone? Shanghai?

  • Lovesick Japanese man finds mystery subway girl!

saitoposter.jpgRemember the really creepy lovelorn Japanese man, Saitou Takuya (斋藤卓也) who was so madly in love with a girl he saw on the Beijing subway that he put up a video of her on the internet that he secretly took of her, asking people to help him find her? A number of commenters did wonder aloud if the whole thing was a spoof, but apparently not.

OK, we admit we're a tad late in finding this story but it appears that Takuya-san has found his dreamgirl! Also our fears that the girl could have been a tranny (since he did not seem to have seen the mystery subway girl's face) were all unfounded.

To find her, Takuya stood outside Jishuitan Station "six times this month holding a picture of the girl Xin Yu, just in case she reappeared at the station". It was not till about 2 weeks ago that he actually bumped into her wearing exactly the same clothes as she was wearing when he first saw her.

The girl told him that he was "funny" and that they could start out as friends. They have also since exchanged cell phone numbers and MSN addresses. And it appears Takuya-san, who has lived in Beijing since 1997, still remains as much in love. He said the girl was "very, very pretty", "has a great figure" and has "great morals":

I'm now more determined that she will be my love. She's simply perfect.

  • China: The Land of Tattoo Enthusiasts?

We'll admit it: Shanghaiist has got ear- and nose-piercings and he's still thinking of getting more just to freak the hell out of everyone he meets here in China, but somehow he still hasn't found the balls to get his first tattoo yet (not unless there is a general anesthetist on hand in the house to knock him out first, that is). This unconventional show caught our attention because although Chinese characters and designs have long been the favourite of tattoo enthusiasts around the world, you don't really think of China itself as a land of tattoo aficionados, do you?

Shanghaiists who happen to be in Beijing tomorrow can check out the final day of the Tattoo Show Convention China 2007 at the Sunshine Art Space 46 Caochangdi (D Zone) Chaoyang District Beijing. More pictures after the jump.
